With a population of approximately 40, 000 residents, Ballina is a historical town which was established in the 19th century and has steadily grown from 5oo aboriginal settlers to its present number comprising of people from diverse cultures such as English, Australian, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders, Irish, Scottish and German.

The economic growth in Ballina started with the need for timber by the growing middle classes of Victorian England and with it's abundant resource in a type of cedar which grew along the Richmond Valley, the gateway to industry was opened.
